For Nonsuch Singers’ first concert back in person since March 2020, we present a programme full of radiant choral classics. Many of these pieces have kept the choir going during lockown and virtual rehearsals, and it will be a very special experience to perform them live once more. The programme centres around the Mass for double choir by Frank Martin – one of the great masterpieces of choral music. Written between 1922 and 1926, the composer kept it from performance until 1963, since when it has grown to become a mainstay of the repertoire for choirs that are drawn to its mystic beauty. Around the Mass, the programme also features the Three Motets by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and Orlando Gibbons’ irresistibly joyful O clap your hands.

Words of comfort abound throughout this programme, from Thomas Tomkins’ powerful music for King David to Franz Schubert’s serene setting of Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my Shepherd”) and Josef Rheinberger’s stunning Evening Hymn. The words of John Bunyan’s character, Mr Valiant-for-truth, are the basis for an inspired piece by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the serenity of Vytautas Miškinis’ Angelis suis Deus, before the dancing rhythm of Ward Swingle’s setting of Christopher Marlowe rounds off the programme.
